“ As an artist, when you’re making something you don’t know what it is for a really long time. So you have to kind of cultivate this space around you where you can trust the thing that you can’t name. And if you feel a little bit insecure or somebody questions you, [you feel like] you need to know what it is. Then what happens is, you give that thing that you’re trying to listen to away. And so you have to cultivate a space that allows you to dwell in that not knowing that is actually really smart and can be really articulate. But you have to let that thread come out. And you have to let it come out at it’s own pace. ”

“ I am always going to be interested in what makes me me. And it turns out that what makes me me will always be unfathomable to me. I know that. I know that I will not get to the bottom of it, but why not try? ”

Jamaica Kincaid
